Jewish Agency Concern

JERUSALEM () -- The head of the agency that coordinates Jewish immigration to Israel said Wednesday he was "very concerned" about recent steps taken against the agency in Moscow.

Jewish Agency director Avraham Burg called a news conference to protest Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigory Karasin's explanation Tuesday that the organization's license to operate in Russia was revoked because it "allowed breaches" of Russian law.

Jewish Agency officials have denied any wrongdoing. Karasin said Tuesday the agency had its registration revoked in the Russian capital, but that problems could be resolved "if the Jewish Agency shows readiness to abide by respective Russian laws and rules.''

"Regrettably, the agency's representation office allowed breaches of Russian laws," he said, without elaborating.
