Japan Gives $10 Million

TOKYO () -- Japan will give Russia $10 million to help dismantle submarine-launched ballistic missiles deployed in Moscow's Far Eastern bases, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said Thursday.

Under START I, a nuclear arms reduction treaty enacted in December 1994, Russia is to dismantle 450 SLBMs deployed in the Far East by 2001.

The $10 million is part of $100 million that Japan agreed to contribute under an October 1993 pact to help dispose of SLBMs possessed by the former Soviet Union.
