Hill Returns To Form With Win in Italy

IMOLA, Italy -- Briton Damon Hill returned to winning form Sunday when he extended his lead in this year's world drivers' championship with an accomplished victory in the San Marino Grand Prix.

The Williams driver finished 16 seconds clear of his great rival, double world champion Michael Schumacher of Germany in a Ferrari.

The result was a triumphant return to form by Hill after a disappointing fourth place finish in last week's European Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring.

His victory lifted him to 43 points in the drivers title race and a 21-point advantage over his Williams teammate Jacques Villeneuve, who has 22.

The Canadian Villeneuve endured an extraordinary race which ended in his retirement. After starting badly and having to pit, he carved his way from last position through to sixth before mechanical problems forced him out.

Austrian Gerhard Berger, in a Benetton, was third and he was followed by Briton Eddie Irvine who was fourth in the second Ferrari.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, in a Jordan, was fifth and Frenchman Jean Alesi, driving the second Benetton, finished sixth.
