Gullit Heads Chelsea

LONDON () -- Dutch star Ruud Gullit was appointed pl

ayer-coach of the English Premier League club Chelsea.

Gullit takes over from Glenn Hoddle, who is leaving as Chelsea manager to become coach of the English national team.

Gullit signed a two-year contract Friday as player-coach and his playing contract was extended until June 1998.

Managing Director Colin Hutchinson will handle financial matters for signings and contracts, while Gullit will concentrate on coaching.

"When I knew Glenn was leaving, Ruud was one of the people we immediately thought of and it was a unanimous decision by the board to offer it to him," Hutchinson said.
