germans reject merger

BERLIN -- German voters Sunday rejected a merger between the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg which would have reunited the historic heartland of old Prussia, an exit poll for ZDF national television showed.

The poll by the Electoral Research Group indicated that in Brandenburg, voters had opposed the merger by 36.5 percent to 31.0. The merger required approval in both states to go ahead.

The poll showed that voters in the city-state of Berlin had approved the merger by 34.5 percent to 23.0.

Polls had showed that Brandenburgers in particular were not ready for a further political upheaval just six years after a German unification which has disappointed the expectations of many.
