German Strikes

FRANKFURT () -- Thousands of German public sector workers held token strikes Monday, bringing public transport in several cities to a standstill to press their claims for a 4.5 percent pay rise.

The strikes, the latest in a series to back the pay claim and protest against government plans to impose a wage freeze as part of a drive to cut public spending, targeted Germany's industrial heartland of North Rhine-Westphalia.

But Chancellor Helmut Kohl vowed to stand firm in his demands for wage restraint as part of a package designed to reduce the cost of labor and create jobs.
