Fears Ease in Dhaka

DHAKA () -- Fears of Bangladesh facing an immediate military crackdown after President Abdur Rahman Biswas had sacked the army chief eased Tuesday with rebellious troops returning to their barracks, state-run radio said.

Troops loyal to Lieutenant General Abu Saleh Mohammad Nasim, who had left their garrisons in the northern towns of Bogra and Mymensingh, have returned to their posts, it said.

Biswas told the nation Monday night he dismissed Nasim following a row over a defense ministry order retiring two senior army commanders. He said Nasim defied his order and asked his troops to march to Dhaka to back a revolt.
