Election Worker Shot

JERUSALEM () -- The shooting of a Russian immigrant hanging Labor party posters Wednesday marred Israel's election campaign and embarrassed the right-wing Likud opposition.

Artur Yarusky was shot twice in the leg by a gunman who police said drove a car rented by the Likud election center. The shooting was the first in the run-up to the May 29 poll.

The attack sounded alarm bells in Israel six months after a right-wing Jew assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Prime Minister Shimon Peres currently holds a slight lead in opinion polls over Likud chief Benjamin Netanyahu. The incident led the news in Israel, where a so-called poster-stripping war between Likud and Labor has been treated by the media in a humorous vein.
