Democrats Arrested

RANGOON, Burma () -- Burma's ruling military junta has arrested several pro-democracy activists ahead of a major meeting planned by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a senior opposition official said Tuesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said in Bangkok, Thailand, that the three-day meeting still was scheduled to start Sunday at Suu Kyi's home in Rangoon.

The meeting coincides with the sixth anniversary of democratic elections held in 1990, when Suu Kyi's movement won an overwhelming majority of parliamentary seats. The junta, however, never allowed parliament to convene.
