Court Refuses Ballot Appeal

Russia's Supreme Court refused to overrule the Central Election Commission's decision to decline to register State Duma deputy Galina Starovoitova as a presidential candidate, Interfax reported.

Starovoitova is the second contender to fail to prove that her complaint against the CEC was grounded. Wealthy entrepreneur Artyom Tarasov failed to win a similar appeal.

According to a spokeswoman from the Prosecutor General's Office, 283,315 of the 1,185,000 signatures Starovoitova presented to the Central Electoral Commission in support of her candidacy "were falsified during the campaign for collecting signatures."

The court stated that Starovoitova had thus failed to collect the 1 million signatures required for registration as a candidate, Interfax reported.
