Coupon Stakes Take Dig at Communists

ULAN-UDE, Eastern Siberia -- In a sharp dig at the Communists, Boris Yeltsin's campaign supporters in southeastern Siberia are offering 1 million rubles, or $200, for the person with the most Soviet-era ration coupons.

Campaign organizers in Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Buryat republic about 4,400 kilometers southeast of Moscow, say they want to remind voters about how they lived when the communists were in power.

Under the terms of the competition, the citizen who presents the most coupons from the Soviet era, will receive the prize, Itar-Tass reported.
