Computer Firms Endorse

President Boris Yeltsin has rallied hard for re-election support from coal miners and soldiers, but Thursday he got a boost from a more cerebral corner -- the computer crowd.

The heads of 15 large Russian computer firms called on Russians to vote for Yeltsin in June 16 presidential poll to ensure the country's place in the global information society, Itar-Tass reported.

"Computerization became possible in Russia only when limits on freedom of information were lifted," said a statement by the Moscow Information Technology Club.

"In a short time period, our country has made gigantic steps toward building a new information society."

"In the next five years, Russia will become a worthy member of the world information society -- but only under the condition that the path already begun is continued," it said.

Yeltsin's biggest rival in the race is Gennady Zyuganov, head of the Communist Party, who many fear will resurrect Soviet-era information controls.
