600 Feared Drowned

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania () -- Nearly 600 passengers were feared dead after their steam ship sank Tuesday in Lake Victoria off the coast of northwest Tanzania.

Passing ships pulled 40 survivors from the water and recovered 21 bodies, Radio Tanzania said.

About 600 passengers were aboard MV Bukoba when it went down 48 kilometers northwest of the port of Mwanza, the broadcast said.

Witnesses aboard two vessels that passed by the scene told Radio Tanzania that many passengers were trapped inside the Bukoba and were feared dead.

The ship is owned and operated by the state's Tanzania Railways Corporation, the n radio said.
