UN Investigates Nigeria

LAGOS () -- Nigeria's detained opposition leader Moshood Abiola has urged a visiting UN delegation to help secure his release, the head of the mission said Friday.

"We met with Abiola, we met with other detainees Femi Falana and Gani Fawehinmi," said Koffi Amega, leader of the UN team. "Of course they asked for our help in their release, but I cannot talk about any conditions."

The UN mission was sent to Nigeria to probe the trial and execution of nine minority rights activists last November as well as military ruler General Sani Abacha's plan to restore democracy.
