TV Station Under Fire

TOKYO () -- Japanese lawmakers grilled the president of a major Japanese broadcaster Tuesday, accusing the station of secretly cooperating with a doomsday cult in exchange for an exclusive interview.

The Tokyo Broadcasting System is under heavy criticism for showing members of the Aum Shinri Kyo cult an unaired 1989 interview with an anti-cult lawyer, Tsutsumi Sakamoto, who, along with his wife and infant son, was killed days later. The cult, accused in last year's gas attack on the Tokyo subway, has also been implicated in the murders of the lawyer and his family.

Parliament members accused the station of abandoning its responsibility to the public in pursuit of higher ratings.
