Troops to Croatia

MOSCOW -- More than a hundred Russian paratroopers left Thursday for the former Yugoslavia to relieve United Nations peacekeepers deployed in eastern Croatia, an official said.

The paratroopers are due to replace Russia's force stationed in east Slavonia, a part of Croatia with a predominantly Serb population, said Defense Ministry spokesman Ivan Skrylnik.

About 400 paratroopers from different units of Russia's airborne force, will be sent to Croatia from their base near the central Russian city of Ryazan before the end of the month, he said.
