Taiwan Delays Exercise

TAIPEI () -- Taiwan, responding to U.S. and domestic concerns, decided Tuesday to put off until June 30 war games it planned on an island near mainland rival China.

"To avoid any misunderstanding and to ease tensions across the Taiwan Strait and in this region, the Defense Ministry announced that this training drill will be suspended until June 30, 1996," a Taiwan defense ministry statement said.

On Monday the United States said the exercise would not help reduce regional tensions.

In Taipei, several members of parliament denounced Tuesday the plan to hold the military exercises on the island of Matsu just 8.8 kilometers from China. Local newspapers said the war games had been set for April 7 to 10.
