Space Station Approved

MOSCOW -- The Russian government has approved the creation of the international Alpha space station, Interfax reported.

Russia's ability to fund its portion of the Alpha station -- a joint project among Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Space agency, which is due to be launched early in the next century -- has been in doubt. The Tuesday decision gives the project the status of "special state importance," the agency reported.

The government also approved the work schedule of the Mir-NASA program, which included launching a Priroda module that was sent off Tuesday from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and will dock with Mir. The module was set to go up in November, but construction lagged behind schedule, The Associated Press reported.
