Sampras Unrepentant

HONG KONG () -- Pete Sampras, America's top-ranked tennis player, Tuesday defended his decision not to play for the U.S. in the Davis Cup match it lost to the Czech Republic last week.

World No. 2 Sampras, looking to regain the No. 1 spot by winning at this week's Hong Kong Salem Open, said his schedule did not permit his participation in the Davis Cup.

"I made the decision earlier this year not to play in the Davis Cup tie," Sampras said. "I feel sorry for Mal but I can't play all the tournaments." MaliVai Washington, ranked 19th, lost both of his singles matches.

The four highest-ranked Americans -- Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang and Jim Courier -- all chose to skip the quarterfinal meeting with the Czechs.
