Russia Breaks Swimming Relay Mark

MOSCOW -- The Volgograd swimming quartet of Vladimir Selkov, Roman Ivanovsky, Denis Pankratov and Alexander Popov have set a new European record in the 100-meter medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 37.48 seconds.

On Saturday, the swimmers eclipsed the old European mark of 3:38.11, established by Russia last August in Vienna .

The team was on pace to break the world record of 3:36.93, held by the United States since 1988, but Popov, who anchored the relay, spent too much time on the blocks.

Still Popov, who holds world records in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyles, said he was happy with the result.
