Rugby Coach Retires

JOHANNESBURG () -- Kitch Christie has stepped down as coach after leading South Africa's national rugby team to a world championship, South African rugby chief Louis Luyt announced Thursday.

Andre Markgraaff, who coaches the provincial Griqualand West squad, was named as Christie's replacement.

Christie had asked to be relieved of the national coaching duties for personal reasons. Luyt said he would stay with the South African Rugby Football Union as national director of coaching, an administrative post, "so that his valuable experience does not go to waste," Luyt said.

Christie's victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup was credited with bringing the races closer together after decades of apartheid separation. Blacks and whites filled stadiums and lined victory parade routes to cheer their rugby players.
