President Toasts Poles

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski unveiled a plaque in Irkutsk on Thursday commemorating Poles persecuted and deported by Moscow regimes over two centuries.

Kwasniewski planned to meet later in the day with descendants of ethnic Poles exiled to Siberia in the 19th century for actions against Russia's tsarist government, which then ruled parts of Poland.

He began his visit Thursday morning with a glass of whiskey mixed with water from Lake Baikal, Itar-Tass said.
