Premier's Physician Murdered

Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has assumed control of the criminal investigation into the early Saturday morning murder of his personal physician, Dmitry Nechayev, a spokeswoman for Chernomyrdin's office said Monday.

Nechayev, 50, was shot in the head twice outside his home at 37 Michurinsky Prospekt at 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning as he returned from a fifth wedding anniversary party with his wife, police spokesmen said Monday.

As he got out of his Volvo, two gunmen emerged from the shadows of a doorway and fired, hitting only Nechayev. They fled the scene in a white Zhiguli moments before police arrived.

Nechayev, an accomplished researcher and the former chief cardiologist at Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital, had been Chernomyrdin's personal physician since 1993. Irina Pavlushevich, a spokeswoman for Chernomyrdin, described him as a "close friend" of the prime minister whose death was a "great shock."

The television news program "Itogi" reported Sunday night that police found a "Chechen trail" at the scene of the murder. Police spokesmen declined to comment Monday on the report but said they have yet to determine a motive for the killing.

Although contract murders are common in Moscow, Nechayev's was unusual because he was not involved in business.

A memorial service and funeral will be held at Central Clinical Hospital on Tuesday. Chernomyrdin is expected to attend.

According to Andrei Kiselyov, a spokesman for the Moscow police, law enforcement authorities have yet to determine a motive for the killing. Although contract murders are common in Moscow, Nechayev's was unusual because he was not involved in business. According to Pavlushevich, he had been a doctor his whole life and not been involved in commerce of any sort.

Chernomyrdin had kidney stones dissolved by ultrasound on Nechayev's advice in 1993 and 1994, and Nechayev was a constant companion of the prime minister on trips.
