Panthers Back on Track, Edge Whalers

MIAMI, Florida -- Ray Sheppard had a goal and an assist in the second period to lead Florida to a 3-2 victory over the Hartford Whalers as the Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak.


Martin Straka also had two assists for the Panthers on Monday night and John Vanbiesbrouck had 25 saves.


Florida broke out of a slump that had the Panthers freefalling in the Eastern Conference. Florida has dropped in two weeks from one of the top playoff seeds in the Eastern Conference to fighting for home-ice advantage in the postseason.


Bruins 1, Senators 1. In Kanata, Ontario, the Boston Bruins scored a lucky goal in the third period credited to Tim Sweeney and held on for a 1-1 tie against the lowly Ottawa Senators.


Ottawa rookie Daniel Alfredsson broke a scoreless tie at 2:21 of the third period. But 68 seconds later Boston caught a break. Dave Archibald's hard clearing attempt from the Ottawa goalmouth hit Sweeney's shinpad and bounced straight back past Senators goalie Damian Rhodes.


Sabres 6, Canadiens 4. In Montreal, Pat LaFontaine scored two goals as the Buffalo Sabres, already eliminated from playoff contention, skated to a 6-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.


Montreal, which had 50 shots at Dominik Hasek, fell to fifth place in the Eastern Conference.


Oilers 6, Canucks 2. In Vancouver, British Columbia, the Edmonton Oilers got steady goaltending from Joaquin Gage to beat the Vancouver Canucks.
