Norilsk Head Said to Offer Resignation

The president of Norilsk Nickel, the nonferrous metals company at the center of controversy over Moscow's privatization program, has submitted his resignation, Interfax said Tuesday.

Citing an unidentified government source, it said Anatoly Filatov tendered his resignation Friday to First Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Soskovets, who is responsible for the metals industry.

The report did not say whether the resignation was accepted.

Interfax quoted the source as suggesting Filatov's action resulted from unspecified "negative financial and economic indicators."

The source said a government commission would visit Norilsk Nickel next Monday to examine the company's 1995 performance.

Company officials have been at odds with Uneximbank, which acquired a controlling stake in November.
