Moldovan Ire Increases

CHISINAU, Moldova -- Moldovan President Mircea Snegur has appealed to parliament to use its constitutional powers and sack the government, saying its members are incompetent and tarnished by corruption.

"In the long run, the people want to know if elected representatives are able to sack those unable to carry out their duties and nominate those able to cope with difficulties and get the country out of the abyss of poverty," Snegur said in an appeal sent to the parliament Wednesday afternoon.

Snegur's appeal followed his failed attempt last month to sack Defense Minister Pavel Creanga on corruption charges. The attempt was overruled by the Constitutional Court
