Librarians Appeal

OMSK, Western Siberia -- Libraries across Russia have deteriorated badly in the 1990s, and buildings and book stocks are both in critical condition, librarians said in an appeal to President Boris Yeltsin.

A nationwide conference of library workers in the Siberian city of Omsk called Yeltsin's attention to librarians' low wages and what they said was the almost complete lack of funding since January.

"The lagging behind of Russian libraries in the sphere of information technologies is a source of special concern,'' they said in an appeal adopted Saturday, Itar-Tass reported. "This may become the reason for Russia's isolation from the world information space.'
