Kantor to Commerce

WASHINGTON () - U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor is President Clinton's choice to replace Ron Brown as commerce secretary, an administration official said Friday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the announcement could be made soon. The surprise development came on a day when Clinton and Kantor were promoting efforts by the trade representative's office to lower the trade deficit with Japan.

Kantor, who was chairman of Clinton's 1992 campaign, had hoped to be Clinton's chief of staff and took the trade job after being passed over for the top White House post.
