Jail Hostages Freed

MOSCOW -- Police and security service agents shot and wounded two of the three criminals who took jail officials hostage Sunday, freeing the captives unharmed, the Interior Ministry said.

The three criminals, held for investigation in a jail of the northwestern Russian town Velikiye Luki, used improvised knives to attack and seize two officials, a man and a woman.

They demanded an escape car to take them out, the ministry said, according to Interfax. It took an elite police unit and agents of the Federal Security Service 15 minutes to free the hostages, as they were leaving with their captors in an ambulance car. Two of the criminals were shot and wounded during the rescue operation, it said.
