Iraq Chess Scrapped

MOSCOW -- Bowing to international pressure, the world chess federation has scrapped plans to hold its championship match in Baghdad and is proposing to hold it in Russia instead, sources said Tuesday.

A Moscow spokeswoman for federation president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov said she could not confirm or deny the plan.

The chess federation, known by its French acronym FIDE, came under fire when it announced plans this year to stage its title match between American Gata Kamsky and Russian Anatoly Karpov in the Iraqi capital in June.
