Hepatitis-A on Rise

KIEV, Ukraine -- Ukrainian health authorities Monday reported an alarming rise in hepatitis cases in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol.

Since the start of the year, the number of hepatitis-A cases in Sevastopol has reached 2,150, compared to 500 registered over the first four months of 1995, officials said. The figure also was eight times the average level of hepatitis-A cases in Ukraine.

"The terrible state of the city's plumbing and sewage systems is the main cause of such an outburst," said Anatoly Tokarev, the head of municipal medical department in Sevastopol.
