Gambling Bill Snagged

WASHINGTON () -- A Senate committee vote on a bill to establish a national commission to investigate the gambling industry was abruptly postponed Thursday, after the committee's chairman complained of an "atrocious'' article on the gambling law in The Washington Post.

Republican Senator Ted Stevens said he took "great umbrage'' at allegations in the newspaper Thursday that gambling lobbyists had rewritten and emasculated the law. The bill that was to have been voted on Thursday denied the proposed gambling commission power to either subpoena documents or convene investigative hearings.

Democratic Senator Paul Simon, the bill's original author, told The Post his bill had been "completely gutted'' in Steven's committee to suit the casino industry.
