eille Fears Violence

MARSEILLE, France () -- Supporters of league leader Auxerre will be barred for their own protection from Saturday's French Cup semifinal in Marseille.

Marseille club officials reportedly said on Thursday that although they have asked for extra units of riot police and a total police presence of 350 officers, they felt unable to guarantee the security of visiting fans.

Auxerre supporters, who have no history of crowd trouble and are generally regarded as among the best behaved in France, will be given no tickets for the game at the Stade Velodrome, which is being rebuilt for the 1998 World Cup finals.

Marseille has had to reduce capacity from 40,000 to 28,000 while the work takes place and there has been a huge local demand for tickets.

Several fans lining up for tickets were injured in a scramble outside the ground on Wednesday.
