Dollar Halts Slide as Wary Bourses See Slight Downturn

REUTERSLONDON -- The dollar arrested a slide against the yen by the end of European trading Monday, clawing back some lost ground, and the main European bourses closed lower.

Shares had a dull day. Trading ahead of key U.S. data later in the week was subdued and further dampened by a lower opening on Wall Street. London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and Zurich all closed down. Only Amsterdam bucked the trend, closing higher.

The dollar's battering -- a slump of more than one yen for the second European session in a row -- put the market on invervention alert. The yen had returned to favor on speculation Tokyo might soon raise interest rates. The Deutsche mark also made ground against the dollar.

Analysts said the dollar faces a testing week with the foreign exchange market seemingly determined to see just how far it can beat the dollar down against the yen before the Bank of Japan roars its disapproval.
