Briton Executed in Asia

SINGAPORE () -- A British criminal convicted of killing and dismembering a South African tourist was hanged Friday, becoming the first Westerner executed in Singapore for murder.

John Martin Scripps, 36, was led out of his cell to the gallows just before dawn, six months after he was found guilty by a Singapore court of bludgeoning Gerard Lowe to death with a camping hammer.

During his 16-day trial, he was also implicated in the murders of a Canadian woman and her son on holiday in Thailand. Their bodies also were butchered in a similar fashion.
