Bayern Axes Coach Otto

BONN -- Germany's record champions Bayern Munich have parted company with their coach Otto Rehhagel just four days before facing Bordeaux in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final.

Bayern Munich said in a statement released late Saturday that Rehhagel and Bayern had agreed to go their separate ways by mutual agreement and that club president Franz Beckenbauer would take over coaching duties until the end of the season.

Italian trainer Giovanni Trapattoni, who coached Bayern last season, will return to the club next season on a two-year contract.

Rehhagel, who joined Bayern after 14 successful years at Werder Bremen, leaves them in the UEFA final and second in the Bundesliga, just behind Borussia Dortmund on goal difference.

But that was not enough for one of Europe's biggest clubs. Rehhagel's players often criticized team selection and tactics and his relationship with many of the club's stars was reported to be strained.

"We reached a point where we felt we had to act and we've done that," Bayern vice president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Rehhagel, whose last match was a 1-0 home defeat by Hansa Rostock, was not available for comment.
