Army Starvation Diet

MOSCOW () -- A Russian soldier died of starvation after existing largely on pickled cabbage, and more than 50 others from his combat unit in the Far East were hospitalized with malnutrition, news reports said Tuesday.

Soldiers of a once-elite tank regiment deployed near the city of Khabarovsk have been suffering for months from a lack of food and low quality rations, the influential daily Izvestia reported.

Mikhail Kubarsky, who fell unconscious and died en route to a hospital last month, was 12 kilograms underweight and "could hardly move," Izvestia said. Two days after his death, a medical commission inspected his unit and sent more than 50 of his comrades to a hospital.

In letters to his family published by Komsomolskaya Pravda, Kubarsky wrote that "breakfast, dinner and supper consisted mainly of sauerkraut" and that he could "hardly load a shell into a gun ... because of weakness." His last letter was dated March 16 and he died three days later, the newspaper said.
