Albanian GDP Surges

TIRANA () -- A recovery in industrial output helped Albania's economy grow by 14 percent last year, and 10 percent economic growth is expected this year, a government analyst said Thursday.

Artur Kasimati of the government's economic development department said preliminary estimates indicated industrial output in Europe's poorest country had grown for the first time in five years.

A 14 percent increase would take Albania's gross domestic product to about 230 billion leks ($2.32 billion) at current prices, the bulk of it from an emerging private sector.
