5 Dead in Railway Blast

MOSCOW () -- Five people were killed and another 13 were wounded in an explosion at a railway station in the capital of the southern region of North Ossetia on Friday, Itar-Tass said.

It quoted local police as saying an explosive device planted at a platform of the Vladikavkaz railway station went off around 3:30 p.m. and made a crater 1 1/2 meters in diameter.

No one claimed responsibility for the explosion, Tass said.

North Ossetia is situated not far from rebel Chechnya, where separatist fighters have been resisting a Russian military onslaught for more than 16 months. Russian troops have several key bases in North Ossetia, which is seen as loyal to Moscow.
