Writer Mozhayev Dies

MOSCOW () -- Russian writer Boris Mozhayev, 73, died Saturday in a hospital near Moscow, NTV reported.

Mozhayev was born in 1923 in a village near Ryazan and was a naval engineer in World War II. He later worked as a journalist and traveled all around Russia, gaining a deep knowledge of the country and its people which he used in his work. He belonged to the "village prose" tradition of Russian literature, drawing inspiration from villages.

Political figures, leading writers and artists expressed their grief at the writer's death. Writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who had been close to Mozhayev, told reporters that he had lost a dear friend.
