Villages Snowed In

MURMANSK, Far North () -- Heavy snowstorms in northern Russia led authorities to close highways and cut off electricity to some villages this week, a news agency reported Tuesday.

Two weeks of snowfall at the end of a harsh winter left the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia covered with 1.5 meters of snow, Itar-Tass reported.

All roads connecting the port of Murmansk on the Barents Sea with coastal villages had to be closed Monday, the report said. Heavy snow broke some electricity lines on the peninsula, while others had to be switched off because snow was so high it reached the wires.
