UN Launches Aid Plan

NAIROBI ( -- The United Nations launched a $25 billion initiative for Africa over the next decade on Friday to revive development in the world's poorest continent as a global priority.

The initiative was welcomed by Kenyan and UN officials in Nairobi, one of several venues across the world for its launch, despite some concern about where the $25 billion would come from.

Steve O'Brien, the World Bank chief of mission in Kenya, said the bulk of the money would go to improving health, education and water supplies, and the World Bank had agreed to be responsible for mobilizing some 85 percent of the resources.
