Toll of Iraqi Sanctions

GENEVA () -- The World Health Organization has said five years of sanctions have set Iraqi health care back half a century and the international community should reconsider the implications of its financial and trade embargo.

In a survey of the effects of sanctions on Iraqi health, the United Nations health agency said most Iraqis had been on a semi-starvation diet since the 1991 Gulf War.

Since sanctions were imposed in response to Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, infant mortality has doubled, and the death rate for children under 5 is at least six times higher.
