Taliban Reverses Stance

MOSCOW () -- The leaders of the Afghan Taliban opposition movement have reverted to an earlier stance that Russia must provide information on Afghans allegedly held since the Afghan War in order for Russia to win the release of seven airmen held by the group, Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigory Karasin said Tuesday.

Karasin said the question of Afghan prisoners in Russia had previously been closed, Interfax reported. "Evidently the Talibs reverted to the question of allegedly interned Afghans only for the purpose of explaining in some way their incomprehensible and groundless delays in resolving the problem of freeing the Russian nationals," he said.

The seven Russian airmen have been held since the group hijacked their plane last August.
