Tajiks Probe Murder

MOSCOW () -- The Tajik government on Friday opened an inquiry into the murder of ORT Russian Public Television journalist Viktor Nikulin, who was shot in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe, Interfax reported.

Nikulin, 29, was shot Thursday afternoon. He was the 29th journalist killed in Tajikistan since the start of the 1992 civil war, Itar-Tass reported.

Russia's ambassador to Tajikistan, Mechislav Senkevich, said the murder "was clearly political and hired."

"The murder seems to be directed against Nikulin's father, Mikhail, a correspondent of Russian Public Television in Tajikistan who has always called for peace" in Tajikistan, said Senkevich.
