Syria Waiting for Polls?

JERUSALEM ) -- Israeli President Ezer Weizman has suggested that Syria may be holding back from making peace with Israel because it expects a "comeback" by hardliners in upcoming Russian elections.

Weizman told the International Press Institute convention Monday that he believed Syrian President Hafez Assad was waiting for the outcome of elections in Israel, the United States and primarily Russia. "Syria is armed to the teeth with tanks, airplanes, ground-to-ground missiles, ground-to-air missiles, naval forces -- all Russian made," said Weizman.

Russia stopped its arms supply to Syria after the fall of the Soviet Union. Weizman suggested Assad was waiting to see if communists could emerge victorious in June polls, and then renew Russia's backing of Syria against its opponents in the Middle East, mainly Israel.
