Subsidies to Pay Wages

MOSCOW () -- Nearly half of the 5.1 trillion rubles ($1.1 billion) earmarked as Russian government subsidies to miners for the first half of 1996 will go toward their wages, according to Anatoly Yanovsky, deputy managing director of Rosugol, which controls most Russian mines, Interfax reported.

The miners will get 2.5 trillion rubles in the second quarter following a schedule for funding the coal-mining industry endorsed by Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin early last month, the news agency quoted Yanovsky as saying.
