State Worker Suspected of Passport Theft

An employee of the Russian Foreign Ministry's consular department has been detained on suspicion of stealing and reselling foreign passports, Moscow's Interior Department said Tuesday.

Officers of the Federal Security Service and Moscow's Regional Directorate on Fighting Organized Crime caught Mikhail Toldonov "red-handed," Interfax reported.

Law enforcement officials said Toldonov, 50, had stolen 250 foreign passports from July to December 1995. After altering the information on the passports, he sold them for $1,500 each, Interfax reported. The agency did not report on the origin of the passports.

Both the Foreign Ministry's press service and the consular department said they had no knowledge of the incident.

If convicted, Toldonov could face up to five years in prison.
