Russia Joins Mad Cow Herd

Russia is considering following Germany's example by taking their own meat to England during June's European soccer championship because of the furor over "mad cow" disease in Britain, an official said Wednesday.

"The disease worries us," said Nikita Simonyan, vice-president of Russia's Soccer Union. "We are thinking of taking some foodstuffs with us after we learned what the Germans were planning to do. But in principle, British foodstuffs are of superior quality as well as their cooks," he added.

He said officials were still considering what action to take, including the possibility of taking a team cook.

"When the team management was choosing a base for the team in England for the championship, we had no information about the disease. All hotels and all food conditions were okay then," Simonyan said.

Nearly all European Union countries and a growing number from outside the bloc have suspended imports of British beef following London's disclosure of a link between bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, and a human equivalent.
