Rugby Goes Glam

LONDON () -- Rugby league, the poor relation of the union code for the past 100 years, unveils a gaudy new product this weekend.

Dancing girls, cheerleaders and karaoke on a giant video screen were among the attractions promised at the 22,000-capacity Charlety stadium, as Paris St. Germain was to host Sheffield Eagles in the opening match of the 12-team European Super League on Friday.

Propelled by $130 million from media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, rugby league hopes to shrug off its European image as a sport played almost exclusively in the north of England in freezing conditions. Instead, 11 British teams plus Paris St. Germain will play throughout the northern summer accompanied by the glitz of major U.S. sports.
